Is That Your Real Hair? Is That a Real Question?

Last time I checked, we were 3 months away from sliding into 2019, so can you please tell me why? Why? WHY certain Caucasians feel the need to ask stupid questions about black hair? The reason that this subject frustrates me is because I am pretty educated on hair that's smoother than my own. I know that Caucasians wash their hair every 2-3 days (depending on the amount of oil buildup). I know that second day hair for them is their favorite and it tends to look the best. I know that if they bleach it, It changes texture and I also know that they worry about breakage just like black people do. So if I can be woke about "white hair" why do I still get questions like..Is that your real hair? Or how do you attach it to your head? Most recently I got he dumbest question ever (from my boss nonetheless) asking me if I cut the bald areas to make the braids straight. To which I replied in my head.. The parts? You've never seen a part before? So if you've never seen a part before, have you ever seen a comb? A comb is for de-tangling but it can also be used to make parts. I tried my best not to allow my eyes to roll back to next week but I was offended. Basically, I feel the need to let people know that black women are tired of explaining our hair. We are tired of answering questions that make us feel like we are outcast or like we are bizarre because we go weeks without washing our hair. We aren't nasty and to be fair, we don't get lice so we may be on to something. Now, I'm not bashing the entire race that happens to be the majority but It baffles me that as a 32 year old black woman, I am still getting questions about the hair that I was born with. Like, why am I explaining my curls and kinks as if it should be bottled up and tested for scientific purposes? Sometimes we want to walk into work with a new hairstyle and be told that it looks nice without being asked how we achieved the look itself. Google is a powerful tool. I'd rather someone look it up as opposed to making me answer the same questions I've had to answer since I was a child on the playground. So, since we are clearly back in the olden days here is an answer to every question that will be asked although it shouldn't be: It takes 6 to 8 hours to get waist length box braids. The price ranges from 180- 200 dollars depending on who you go to. Yes, It hurts. The braids last for 6-8 weeks (we don't wash them). Our hair flourishes when its dirty. If we washed it everyday it would fall out. The weave is braided into our real hair using a braiding technique and most of the time its an amazing African lady that does it (generally with a baby named Bijou strapped to her back). When we are ready to take the braids out, we cut the hair that is not ours and un braid the rest. Our natural hair can be difficult to tame at times and often causes us to be late to things. Braids make life easier but don't get it twisted we are still going to be late because. Black. This is all the necessary information so if you have a question that can't be answered by the information provided. Beat it.
