Can't Relate

Sunday nights TV lineup Ieft me feeling like I was the only girl in the world *Rihanna voice*. I watched two shows that were so far from relatable to me, I couldn't wait to tap away at this keyboard like a slightly disoriented Kermit the Frog. As I watched Issa have unprotected sex after popping a pill on a Ferris wheel at Coachella, I couldn't help but grip my invisible pearls and wonder if folks actually do stuff like this. I mean, I was pretty wild in my twenties but the stuff that people try to pass off as normal sounds like one mouth swab away from the doctor telling you to come in to the office to discuss your results with a side of comments like "There's life after this." Don't get me wrong, I love Insecure but sometimes I feel the need to ask where the shows are for women who carry pepper spray in their purse when they go on dates?? Where are the shows for women who don't live to left and right swipe on Tinder? Where are the shows for women who love a good time but aint tryna die??? Although I wont ever stop watching shows I could never relate to, I do feel like there is a wide open market for boring, pretty girls who scare easily. Lol! After taking an eye roll worthy roller coaster ride down HBO lane, I hopped off briefly to Keep Up With The Kardashians. I watched for (all of) 7 minutes before Kim went to the doctor and found out she had carpal tunnel syndrome from taking too many selfies.....yeah... I looked down at the brace located on right wrist that I have to wear every night because I too, suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and started to ponder. This lady has carpal tunnel from Selfies...SELFIES.... A gat damn selfie? My reasons for having carpal tunnel are because I write papers, blogs, reports and I am in the process of writing a book. After Kim made her assistant take a picture of her because her wrist was hurting I turned it off and looked at my eyelids for 8 hours out of pure frustration for what television has become. lol
I don't consider myself to be prudish or a total snoozefest and as a writer I feel like its super important to use your imagination to create a story for every audience. I am curious to know who actually feels like any of the shows on TV are relatable. Growing up I watched shows like Married with Children and The Cosby Show. I always felt like my family was somewhere in between. We weren't quite the Cosby's and although we were a bit too polished to be the Bundy's I still found relatable scenarios in both shows to keep my interest.
I think any and everyone in the entertainment field looks at secular entertainment from a critical point of view though. We all feel like we could do it better! Lol! I'm not even going to lie, If (when) FX or Fox gives me the green light to entertain y'all the way I would like to, I'm for sure going for relatable route because lets be real.....no where in hell are mildly successful women going to festivals and taking pills from strangers. Real women (especially black women) grab the pill, fist it and throw it over their shoulder when no ones looking. Duhhhhh!!!! All critism aside I think we need more shows on TV that depict the life of driven black women over 30 who like to have fun and bitch about their weight fluctuating!! Now thats a hit!!! What do you all think?
